BETT GALLERY REPRESENTING JOHN KELLY

Internationally renown John Kelly is best known in Australia for his paintings and large sculptures of William Dobell’s cows.  These papier-mâché creations were used during WWII in an attempt to confuse enemy aircraft as to the location of the Australian airbases. His sculptures of cows have been exhibited on the Champs Elysées, Paris, in Les Champs de la Sculpture, 1999, Monte Carlo, in La Parade des Animaux, 2002, the MAMAC in France, The Hague, 2007, Glastonbury (2006 and 2007)Cork city 2011, Melbourne Docklands and MONA.
More recently, Kelly’s work has seen him tackle contemporary issues – such as branding in contemporary culture, and museum politics – in places such as the Guangzhou Triennale, 2008, and the Göteborg Biennale, 2009. In 2005 Kelly’s work was commissioned by David Walsh (Museum of Old and New Art, MONA) in Hobart to create work for his Moo Brew beer labels.   Limited edition prints of this work are now available at Bett Gallery.

IMMERSIVE MAURO-FLUDE EXHIBITION

Labyrinth marks Mauro-Flude's strong entrance into the commercial art market.  Her previous success both nationally and internationally see her at the forefront of the digital media movement.  A feature of her exhibition is the use of e-textiles; drapes embroidered with sequined cryptograms, decoded only via an application on a mobile device.

"Sequins and mirrors can be used to transport meaning to other places.  Wild places that, as yet, can only be imagined"  Nancy Mauro-Flude 2015

Labyrinth is on in the Bett Gallery backspace until the 26 of June. Bring your phone and explore.

HIGHLY ANTICIPATED RAYMOND ARNOLD EXHIBITION

Elsewhere World opens on the 3rd of July and sees Arnold returning to printmaking, in particular, prints of the Tasmanian landscape.

"In the early 1980s I developed several large prints about the landscape of Western Tasmania. They were ’postcards’ for imaginary audiences far over the horizon – images of wild, desolate, indifferent places just beginning to feel the pressure of the approaching bulldozer. The works in this upcoming exhibition ‘bookend’ that earlier work. They share some characteristics with those artworks from 30 years ago but essentially they represent a big change. That shift in meaning and context is bound up with the fact that I live and will hopefully die within the pictured landscape and that the audience for these paintings surrounds me in the ‘here and now’."  Raymond Arnold 2015

THE SKULLBONE EXPERIMENT

A wilderness residency at Skullbone Plains engaged a diverse group of Australian artists in an ancient, remote landscape. Initiated by the Tasmanian Land Conservancy, a not-for-profit organisation protecting private land for conservation in Tasmania, this project fostered the link between contemporary art practice and the natural world.
Participating artists: Tim Burns, Joel Crosswell, Julie Gough, Philip Hunter, Janet Laurence, Vera Moller, Imants Tillers, Megan Walch, Richard Wastell, Philip Wolfhagen and John Wolseley.  Curated by Philip and Catherine Wolfhagen.
The resulting exhibition opened at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Launceston, and will now travel to Galleries UNSW, COFA. 18 July - 30 August.

Poets and Painters: A tribute to Dick Bett AM

The phenomenal success of Poets and Painters 2013 sees us already planning for the next one.  The support and goodwill from the community has been overwhelming. Thank you to all the wonderful poet's and artist's that took part in this landmark exhibition. The power failure at the opening party certainly helped to create an atmospheric opening not to be forgotten.

Opening tonight: Thornton Walker – Koay teow th’ng

Peranakan II, 2012.  Watercolour, ink and acrylic on paper. 172 x 140 cm

Thornton Walker is a Melbourne based visual artist, whose practice explores memory, stillness and nostalgia. Since his first solo exhibition in 1980, Walker has exhibited widely, and his works are held in both national and international collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of NSW, Parliament House, and the British Museum.

Walker produced his latest body of work Koay teow th’ng, while undertaking an artist’s residency in Penang, Malaysia. In this exhibition, Walker mediates on the past through capturing the faded faces that decorate Penang’s temple walls. Through his characteristic use of photography, the artist translates atmospheric images into watercolour, ink, acrylic and oil paint. The intimately cropped works suggest a quiet fragility and passage of time, though their ink stained and spattered surfaces.

In Koay teow th’ng, Walker gently mocks our enthusiasm for the allure of foreign cultures. With a wry irreverence, the artist contrasts his dreamy portraits with unrelated Chinese characters. In his Nonya girl image, the script reads “lychee in heavy syrup.” The banality of the text belies the atmospheric and romantic portrait. Indeed, the title of the exhibition takes its name from a popular noodle soup dish sold at road side stall in Malaysia.

Come and join us for the opening at 6pm, November 9.
Koay teow th’ng runs until December 1st.
